Our ‘can’ in the lakes

Meet Johnny! He’s our friend and a big fan of SPAM® brand, living and working as a pub chef in the Lake District. As we head into the peak camping and caravanning season, we’ll be joining him for some great outdoors cooking with SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham.

Outdoor inspiration!

Work up an appetite in the fresh air. Here are some of Johnny’s classic ideas for fast, simple easy to cook ideas for the campsite, caravan site or simply your back garden!

SPAM® Campsite Noodles.

    Ingredients
  • 1 x 340g can SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham (4 quarter inch slices) approx. 1/3 of a 340g can.
  • 1 x pack instant ramen noodles, with seasoning packet.
  • 2 eggs.
  • Couple spring onions chopped.
  • Hot pepper or soy sauce.
    Directions
  1. Fry the slices of SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham product.
  2. At the same time boil a pot of water and noodles and cook for the recommended time…add the seasoning packet.
  3. Fry two eggs.
  4. Take out half the noodles with a slotted spoon and add to 2 bowls retaining the broth in the pot.
  5. Top the noodles with the fried eggs.
  6. Pour flavoured noodle broth over the dish.
  7. Garnish with chopped spring onions and few dashes soy or hot pepper sauce.

SPAM® Campfire Rice

    Ingredients
  • Couple of tablespoons of vegetable oil.
  • SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham – half a 340g can, cut into small quarter to half inch cubes.
  • 1 x small can peas.
  • 1 x red pepper chopped.
  • 1 x red onion chopped.
  • 1 x pack ready cooked rice.
  • Hot pepper sauce or soy sauce.
    Directions
  1. In a frying pan, heat 1 tablespoon cooking oil and fry the cubes of SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham for a few minutes.
  2. In the same frying pan add the onion and red pepper and cook for a few minutes.
  3. Add peas and rice and stir to cook for a few minutes.
  4. Serve with dashes of hot pepper sauce or soy sauce.

SPAM® Halloumi Wrap

    Ingredients
  • 4 x large tortillas.
  • 1 x 340g can of SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham.
  • 1 x 250g of Halloumi cheese.
  • 1 x red pepper, deseeded and cut into strips.
  • 5 or 6 x spring onions sliced.
  • Hot pepper sauce (a bottle goes a long way when camping).
    Directions
  1. Cut both SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham and halloumi into 8 slices.
  2. Prepare the red pepper by deseeding and slicing into strips.
  3. Chop the spring onions.
  4. Fry SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham and halloumi together, until halloumi browns slightly.
  5. Lay the tortilla flat, add two slices of cooked SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham and two slices of cooked halloumi. Add quarter of the red pepper slices and chopped spring onions. Sprinkle with hot pepper sauce and roll and you have a campsite meal all wrapped up!

SPAM® Army Camp Stew

    Ingredients
  • 1 x 340g can SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham product sliced.
  • 1 x can baked beans.
  • 1 x small can hot dogs.
  • Sliced cheese (pack of 10).
  • 2 x packs of ramen noodles - with seasoning packets.
  • Dried chilli flakes.
  • Splash of hot pepper sauce.
  • Black pepper
  • 1 x chicken stock cube.
  • Cup sliced green onions.
    Directions
  1. Fry SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham slices until browned.
  2. In a large shallow pot, arrange SPAM® product slices, chopped hot dogs, dry noodles and baked beans.
  3. In a mug, combine the stock cube with the ramen seasoning packet, dried chilli flakes, hot pepper sauce add hot water and stir.
  4. Pour the seasoning mixture into to the pot and top up with hot water to almost cover the ingredients, top with slices of cheese.
  5. Bring the pot to a boil and cook the noodles for 5 to 6 minutes or until noodles are tender and the stew is heated through.
  6. Garnish with green onions and serve.
